King’s Loop is a scenic 9km walking route around Cashel and the surrounding countryside, taking approximately 2 hours to complete. The route offers visitors an opportunity to experience the area’s beautiful landscapes while taking in views of some of its most famous landmarks.

The Rock of Cashel & Hore Abbey Walk

The Rock of Cashel & Hore Abbey Walk is a scenic and easy walking route connecting two of Cashel’s most important historic landmarks. The route takes visitors from the Rock of Cashel down through the surrounding countryside to the atmospheric ruins of Hore Abbey, offering beautiful views of the Rock along the way.

The full loop is approximately 4.6km and takes around 1 hour 15 minutes to complete at an easy pace. The walk includes the opportunity to explore Hore Abbey before returning towards Cashel, making it an ideal way to experience the town’s history and countryside together.

The route can include uneven or muddy ground, particularly around the fields near Hore Abbey, so suitable footwear is recommended, especially after wet weather.

The Tipperary Heritage Way

The Tipperary Heritage Way is a scenic long-distance walking route that follows the River Suir through the beautiful countryside of South Tipperary, connecting the Knockmealdown Mountains with the historic town of Cashel. Along the route, walkers can discover a wealth of natural and historical attractions, including abbeys, castles, churches, ancient graveyards and the beautiful landscapes of the Golden Vale.

For visitors based in Cashel, the Cashel to Golden section is particularly suitable, beginning at the Rock of Cashel and following quiet country roads and riverside paths towards Golden. This section is approximately 10.5km and takes around 2 to 2½ hours to complete.

The full Tipperary Heritage Way extends for approximately 56–60km from the Vee Gap to Cashel and is generally completed over two days.

St. Declan’s Way

St. Declan’s Way is a historic 115–116km pilgrim walking route linking the Rock of Cashel with St. Declan’s Monastery in Ardmore, County Waterford. The route follows ancient pilgrimage paths associated with St. Declan, who is traditionally said to have travelled between Cashel and Ardmore to meet St. Patrick.

Starting at the Rock of Cashel, the trail passes through Cahir, Ardfinnan and Goatenbridge before crossing the Knockmealdown Mountains and continuing through Mount Melleray, Lismore, Cappoquin and Aglish before finishing in Ardmore. The route is fully waymarked with blue arrows and offers a mixture of quiet country roads, tracks, forest trails and mountain paths.

Difficulty: Moderate, with a strenuous section across the Knockmealdown Mountains
